War Redraws the Tourist Map
Ryanair reveals that the war in Iran is diverting travelers to the Canary Islands for Easter
Ryanair has confirmed to several national media outlets that travelers are being redirected to European destinations perceived as safe, with the Canary Islands standing out. This shift is expected to bring a high‑summer season marked by very high occupancy rates and price increases.
Sources from the Irish low‑cost carrier explained to La Vanguardia that, as a result of the Middle‑East conflict, many European travelers will opt for nearer and more stable destinations. In addition to Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece are projected to be the main beneficiaries.
Ryanair notes that the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran has already translated into a rise in demand for flights to these four southern European countries ahead of the Easter holidays.
Tourism groups, both domestic and international, agree that Spain will absorb a large portion of the tourist flows displaced by the war, according to preferente.com.
“In the current context we could see a short‑term increase in interest for Mediterranean destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Italy,” said a spokesperson for TUI.
Similarly, W2M highlighted that the Canary and Balearic Islands are “an oasis of tranquility for European tourists,” as stated by its CEO, Gabriel Subías.
