The Antigua City Council, in its commitment to this sport, has acquired new portable and modular basketball courts.

Mayor Matías Peña and Sports Councilor Samuel Torres witnessed the first Antigua City Council Basketball Tournament organized by the Tamobasket Sports Club, with teams from Pájara, Puerto del Rosario and Antigua participating.

“The passion of these young basketball players on the court is the best justification for continuing to invest in basketball in Antigua,” says Mayor Matías Peña. “We commend the support of parents, mothers and guardians, and we thank the work of the coaches who teach far more than game techniques on the court—they also instill personal values in everyday life.”

Councilor Samuel Torres notes that the goal is to keep the tournament running in future years:

“Everyone plays here—the tall, the taller, the good and the best—and that is key to building a team and enjoying the game.”

The idea is to promote and foster basketball across the island of Fuerteventura and to establish an island‑wide league for all youth categories in the coming years, says Tamobasket coach and Antigua team manager Jaromir Fohler. He adds that the municipality’s support was crucial during the preparation and organization of this inaugural tournament, which features for the first time Antigua’s Minibasket team, the club’s first women’s team, as well as Los Tigres del Sur and a team from the island league based in Puerto del Rosario
