Towns in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands in Spain, is often lauded for its breathtaking beaches and surreal volcanic landscapes. It is in fact the island in the Canaries with the best beaches and the place to be for surf fans. While many are aware of the island’s natural beauty, fewer people are familiar with its charming towns that hold a unique allure of their own. If you’re considering a trip to Fuerteventura, it’s worth setting aside time to explore these hidden treasures. Here’s a list of towns that you must see during your holiday on Fuerteventura.

Corralejo

Situated on the northern tip of the island, Corralejo is one of Fuerteventura’s most vibrant towns. Known for its lively atmosphere and water sports, this town offers a blend of traditional Spanish culture and modern amenities. Whether you want to indulge in some authentic Canarian cuisine, visit the bars at night, do some shopping, or partake in (kite) surfing, Corralejo has something for everyone. Tip: you don’t need to bring your own surfboard, there are lots of shops that rent them out.

El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a beautiful small town with the prettiest little bays to swim and snorkel. After a relaxing day at the beach, you can have a bite at one of the small restaurants, including my favorite place called Happy Cactus (vegan), and visit some shops to buy some colorful souvenirs. So don’t forget your full-face mask and flippers, to spot some amazing fishes at this must-see town in Fuerteventura.

Antigua

Located inland, Antigua is a town that captures the traditional spirit of Fuerteventura. Here you’ll find cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and a sense of tranquility that is often missing from the more tourist-centric locations. Don’t forget to visit the Church of Our Lady of Antigua, which stands as an example of the town’s rich history, and drink a coffee afterward that will cost you almost nothing.

Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste is designed for those who want a laid-back holiday without straying too far from modern comforts. It’s an excellent place for families and couples, offering a wide range of activities from golfing, to an indoor shopping mall, a beach with beds you can rent, and a playground with a trampoline for the kids. The horseshoe-shaped beach is particularly inviting for those who just want to relax and soak up the sun, and finish with a drink and some food in one of the many restaurants (including English, Indian, and European options).

Morro Jable

If you’re staying in the southern part of the island, Morro Jable is a must-visit. This fishing village has evolved into a bustling town, yet it has managed to retain its authentic charm. The lighthouse, which is one of the town’s landmarks, offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean that are absolutely stunning during sunset. Combine a visit with a visit to Costa Calma, known for its beaches and small shops.

Betancuria

Betancuria is the oldest town in Fuerteventura and once served as its capital. The town is named after Jean de Béthencourt, who founded it in the early 15th century. Visit the Santa Maria Church, a stunning example of Canarian architecture, and wander around the quiet streets to get a feel for the island’s history. There is almost always live music and traditional foods to try out. It is also the perfect place to buy some gifts for your loved ones at home. Fun fact: dogs are welcome in most restaurants and some places even have cats you can adopt.

Pájara

Less frequented by tourists, Pájara is a delightful town located in the mid-western part of the island. Its main attraction is the Church of Our Lady of Regla, which has a unique façade made up of Aztec-inspired designs. Aside from the church, Pájara offers a peaceful atmosphere and scenic views that make it a great spot for a day trip.
