Alcogida Modernizes with Accessibility and Virtual Interpretation

New Digital and Accessible Resources to Make Majorero Crafts and Traditions More Understandable

The Ecomuseum La Alcogida will launch a renovation project in the coming months, placing accessibility and cutting‑edge interpretive technology at its core. The contract, valued at over €219,000, is part of the Strategic Museum Plan of Fuerteventura and is financed by the Government of the Canary Islands through Gesprotur, within the Canary Islands Tourism Infrastructure Strategy.

The initiative stems from an institutional collaboration with the Cabildo, which drafted the project to:

  • Update the centre’s visual identity.
  • Renew its content.
  • Improve the way visitors are introduced to this emblematic space that showcases Majorero culture and traditions.

Objectives

  • Provide a more understandable, interactive, and accessible experience for visitors.
  • Highlight traditional ways of life and occupations that are disappearing or in decline.

Planned Interventions

  • Installation of sound and video equipment in exhibition rooms.
  • Introduction of interactive tools that encourage active public participation.
  • Reorganization of exhibition areas and renewal of the supports and structures that house the museum’s pieces, enhancing both conservation and visual impact.
  • Addition of new informational panels, signage, and bespoke audiovisual content to reinforce the interpretive journey.

These new resources will allow the museum to represent and explain aspects of traditional island life that can no longer be observed directly, such as historic trades like stone masonry and tinsmithing.

“The Strategic Museum Plan seeks to revalue and modernize the island’s museum network, including opening new spaces and renovating existing ones,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, after a site visit. “La Alcogida is one of the most visited centres, and its transformation is highly demanded.”

“This action will improve the tourist experience across Fuerteventura’s museum network,” emphasized Jéssica de León, Canary Islands Minister of Tourism. “For La Alcogida, the intervention is integral: it will enhance accessibility, promote digitisation, and deliver a more interactive experience.”

The Cabildo prepared the tender, which was awarded to GAIA Consultores Insulares S.L.U. through the public company Gesprotur. The contractor has a six‑month execution window, with works slated to be completed before the end of the year.
