AM-CC Highlights Its Role in Antigua to Boost the Municipal Budget

The Canary Coalition (CC) in Antigua announced its recent contributions to the municipal budget, which was approved this week. According to the party, the municipal group succeeded in getting the town council to allocate almost half a million euros for priority actions in the municipality.

Key Contributions

  • €150,000 for the comprehensive refurbishment of the municipal sports centre.
  • €225,000 earmarked for a “shock plan” in the tourist zone.
  • €35,000 dedicated to heritage protection, specifically the restoration of the cornices of the old school buildings in Antigua Square.
  • €40,000 to establish a subsidy line for the taxi sector.

These initiatives were initially presented as amendments to the municipal budget after the three AM‑CC councilors left the governing coalition. Following preliminary negotiations with the mayor, it was agreed that the planned actions will be financed from the treasury surplus, expected to be available in May.

“These actions are priority items and must be undertaken urgently,” the party stated in a press release sent to the island’s media.

The spokesperson for AM‑CC in the Antigua City Council, David Alberto, added:

“We cannot keep waiting any longer for a shock plan in an abandoned tourist area, for the complete repair of Antigua’s municipal sports centre that is falling apart, for the restoration of the old school cornices in the square, or for the forgotten subsidy to taxi driver associations,” he demanded before the full council.

After securing an explicit commitment from the mayor to address CC’s requests, the party backed the municipal budgets, which also incorporate proposals previously promoted by CC councilors in areas such as urban planning, beaches, and the local development agenda.

In his concluding remarks, nationalist spokesperson David Alberto emphasized that, through consensus and institutional respect, it is possible to work from the opposition to defend the municipality’s interests while giving the governing group the opportunity to implement the proposed measures.
