AM-CC proposes cutting ICIO to a minimum to boost housing in Betancuria
Press Release – The municipal group of Asamblea Majorera‑Coalición Canaria (AM‑CC) in the Betancuria Town Hall has presented a motion to amend the ordinance governing the Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO). The aim is to set the tax rate at the legally permitted minimum and to apply the maximum possible deductions.
The proposal seeks to ease the growing difficulty of accessing housing in the municipality, a situation aggravated by:
- A shortage of available homes
- Rising material costs
- Administrative complexity
- Economic pressure on new construction and rehabilitation in the rural environment
The initiative focuses fiscal deductions on:
- Works intended for primary‑residence housing
- Restoration of traditional buildings
- Projects promoted by young residents
- Actions that improve accessibility and energy efficiency
AM‑CC argues that the Town Hall must use all available fiscal tools to encourage population retention and local economic development. The motion also calls for the municipal technical and economic services to produce an economic and social impact report, which will help evaluate the measures and design complementary housing‑support programmes for Betancuria.
“The municipality is facing an increasingly difficult situation for young people, families and workers who want to settle here,” said Enrique Pérez, AM‑CC spokesperson in Betancuria.
“With this reduction of the ICIO that we are proposing to the governing group, we aim to provide a real incentive for the construction or rehabilitation of homes as permanent primary residences, actively combating the depopulation we suffer in the municipality.”
“With this motion we want to send a clear message of support to those who wish to live and develop their life projects in Betancuria,” Pérez concluded.
