Antigua Welcomes Caleta de Fuste Ring Road After €7.5 Million Investment

The Antigua City Council officially handed over the new ring road in Caleta de Fuste on September 24, marking the completion of the Pablo Picasso Street works that, together with Virgen de la Peña Avenue, form the new traffic infrastructure.

Project Overview

  • Total investment: approximately €7.5 million, fully financed with municipal funds.
  • It is the largest urban development ever carried out by the council in the tourist town.
  • The ring road is regarded by construction firms and architectural firms as one of the most complex projects on the island, due to a complete overhaul of underground utilities (water supply, sewage, electricity, and communications).

Key Features

  • Dedicated bicycle lane with a contrasting surface.
  • Minimalist, durable street furniture and shaded areas with planted trees.
  • Improved pedestrian crossings with clearer signage.
  • Speed‑reduction measures and handicapped‑accessible parking spaces.
  • These upgrades aim to enhance road safety, accessibility, and comfort for both pedestrians and drivers in one of Fuerteventura’s most important tourist hubs.

Official Statements

“The Caleta de Fuste ring road is a flagship macro‑project that improves traffic flow, increases safety, and includes a total redesign of the distribution networks, taking the town’s growth into account,” explained Mayor Matías Peña García.

The councilor expressed gratitude:
“We thank all parties involved—the municipal technical team, construction companies, the mixed‑ownership company Aguas de Antigua, and the coordination of the Works & Services department led by Juan Cabrera, as well as Urban Planning headed by David Alberto.”

Mayor Peña also highlighted the project’s quality:
“Beyond its execution complexity, the project stands out for the high‑quality materials used in paving, asphalt, and finishing.”

The ring road now serves as a modern, safe, and accessible artery for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing Caleta de Fuste’s position as a key destination on the island.
