Binter Expands Fleet, Investing €189 Million in Nine New ATR 72‑600 Aircraft
Financing agreement
Binter has secured a financing deal with a banking consortium composed of Spain’s leading banks—CaixaBank, Santander and BBVA—to develop its fleet‑expansion programme. The airline’s president, Rodolfo Núñez, and vice‑president, Alfredo Morales, signed the agreement in Gran Canaria with the three banks.
Investment details
Through this operation, Binter will invest €189 million to acquire nine ATR 72‑600 aircraft: four will be purchased outright and five are options, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2031.
Environmental benefits
The new ATR 72‑600 series incorporates engines that make it the regional aircraft with the lowest emissions on the market, consuming 45 % less fuel and emitting 45 % less CO₂ than similarly sized regional jets, according to a company note.
Leadership statements
“The airline thereby maintains its firm commitment to guarantee maximum comfort and, at the same time, connectivity,” said President Rodolfo Núñez.
“The extraordinary efficiency of the PW127XT engines, specifically optimized for ATR models, allows us to set new standards in fuel‑consumption reduction, CO₂ emissions and operating costs, enabling the implementation of an increasingly sustainable aviation model.”
Vice‑president Alfredo Morales thanked the continued confidence of the nation’s major banks in the company’s fleet‑acquisition operations, noting that it “allows us to bring our Canarian way of flying to more destinations while preserving our essence.”
Fleet modernization history
Binter’s fleet modernization has been ongoing since 2002. Since then, the airline has continuously added ATR aircraft in successive transactions, with a total value now exceeding US $1.1 billion.
In addition, Binter operates 16 Embraer E195‑E2 jet‑liners, incorporated into the fleet since December 2019 to serve mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and longer‑range international routes.
Since the historic delivery of its first ATR 72‑200 in 1989 by the Franco‑Italian aircraft manufacturer, the Canary‑based carrier has consistently demonstrated its commitment to providing efficient and comfortable air transport by selecting the most suitable aircraft model for each operational context.
Role of the ATR 72
The ATR 72 is Binter’s flagship aircraft for short‑haul flights, including inter‑island routes in the Canary Islands and Madeira, as well as international services to African coastal airports opposite the archipelago and to Funchal. Its turboprop design enables take‑offs and landings on shorter runways.
These aircraft feature the latest technological advances and stand out for their high efficiency, maneuverability, reliability, and low fuel consumption.
