Cabildo Announces Solution for Lajares Crossing, €4 Million Investment and Sanitation Upgrade
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura unanimously approved on Friday the project to upgrade the Lajares crossing, an intervention valued at over €4 million. After securing financing for the project almost a year ago, the island authority is taking a further step to implement works that have long been demanded by residents of Los Lajares. Population growth and traffic‑pedestrian conflicts have plagued this stretch, which lacks shoulders and sidewalks in many sections.
The situation worsened with the opening of the highway exit, turning that road into a mandatory route to El Cotillo. According to the Cabildo’s statement released after the plenary session, the project aims to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety along the FV‑109 corridor, and the approval is a prerequisite for launching the construction tender.
The communiqué does not yet specify whether the solution will involve merely refurbishing the existing crossing or a full traffic re‑ordering that could open alternative routes. The Cabildo notes that the work will be carried out in coordination with the La Oliva City Council and will also include sanitation improvements.
“This is a project highly demanded by the population, as it will enhance a stretch that has seen a considerable increase in use,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo.
“These are works of great interest that will improve a crossing facing severe traffic difficulties,” added Blas Acosta, Councillor for Roads, emphasizing also the sanitation solution.
Background
- May 23 2025 – The Cabildo plenary approved the initial financing to start contracting the works.
- A multi‑year budget of €3.8 million was allocated, with an initial €245,000 earmarked for 2025.
- The file was initiated by the Treasury and later handed over to the Councils of Roads for execution.
These steps set the groundwork for the current approval, which now paves the way for the tendering process and the eventual construction of the upgraded crossing and associated sanitation infrastructure.
