Cabildo Builds Pedestrian Walkway Linking Llanos de la Mareta Parking to Airport

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Roads Department, has begun work on a new pedestrian link between the airport, the Llanos de la Mareta parking area, and the nearby bus stop. The access finalises recent works on the elevated structure over the FV‑2 road and the entrance road to the parking lot, creating a 145‑metre linear walkway that will safely guide passengers and workers between the two points.

Project Overview

  • Total length: 145 m (two sections)
  • Section 1: 80 m long, minimum width 2 m, asphalt surface with painted markings and curbs to separate pedestrians from traffic. It runs parallel to the parking lot entrance.
  • Section 2: 65 m long, width 1.80 m, featuring a concrete sidewalk finished with double‑component red paint and a protective bollard curb.

The works also include rehabilitation of the elevated structure over the FV‑2, which required repairs to the bridge deck and its side barriers due to deteriorated reinforcement and severely damaged parapets. Additionally, the access road to Llanos de la Mareta has been resurfaced and equipped with a special safety barrier to protect motorists in case of a fall on the airport access ramp.

Official Statements

“The Cabildo is continuously working to improve safety for both pedestrians and vehicles across the island’s road network,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura.

“This project provides a safe pedestrian route for airport passengers and staff who park at Llanos de la Mareta or arrive by bus,” explained Blas Acosta, Councillor for Roads.

Implementation Phases

The third phase of the Roads Service’s programme in the area is divided into two stretches:

  1. From Llanos de la Mareta parking to the elevated bridge – 80 m, asphalted, marked, and separated from traffic.
  2. From the bridge to the bus stop – 65 m, concrete sidewalk with red paint and protective bollards.

These improvements complete the broader effort to modernise the infrastructure surrounding the airport, enhancing accessibility and safety for all users.
