Cabildo shuts down employment schemes “Cabildo Improves Your Commutes” and “Cabildo
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura officially closed on Tuesday the two employment programmes “Cabildo Improves Your Commutes” and “Cabildo Informs You.” Over the past year, the schemes have provided jobs for about twenty people while enhancing essential public services across the island.
Lola García, the island’s president, highlighted the corporation’s commitment to initiatives that “offer real opportunities to unemployed people through innovative projects that also deliver a direct service to citizens.”
Both programmes were co‑financed by the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN). Together with the “Cabildo Acts” programme, which ended in December, total investment in the Cabildo’s employment plans now exceeds €1.7 million, benefiting roughly 60 individuals.
“The results have been very positive, so we will keep promoting employment plans in sensitive areas such as social services, the environment and schools, to continue meeting the population’s needs,” García added.
Improving Transport Infrastructure
Nuria Cabrera, Councillor for Employment Promotion, explained that the “Cabildo Improves Your Commutes” plan hired 13 unemployed workers to upgrade public‑transport infrastructure, making it safer and more accessible. The programme’s budget amounted to €369,733.23.
Key actions, carried out in coordination with the Transport Department, included:
- Renovation of stations in Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable.
- Upgrades to preferential stops in Caleta de Fuste, Gran Tarajal, Corralejo, and El Cotillo.
- Installation of shelters in roughly fifty localities across the island.
Inclusion and Citizen Services
The “Cabildo Informs You” plan, with an investment of €292,428, focused on social inclusion for people with intellectual, physical, or developmental disabilities. It created nine jobs, strengthening assistance at the Cabildo’s Citizen Service Offices (OAC) located in Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal, Morro Jable, and Corralejo, as well as at the Agricultural Extension Office in Gran Tarajal.
Cabrera emphasized that these programmes illustrate the Cabildo’s strategy of targeting employment toward strategic sectors and public service:
“We are responding to real needs of the population and generating a positive impact on the island.”
