Canary Islands Align with Spain's Stance on Western Sahara
President of the Canary Islands Emphasizes That Foreign Affairs Are the Competence of the Spanish Government
The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, reiterated that his regional government “shares and complies” with Spain’s position on Western Sahara. Madrid views the most realistic solution as granting autonomy to the territory under Moroccan sovereignty, a stance reflected in the United Nations Security Council resolution of 31 October.
Clavijo made these remarks during a press conference that accompanied the launch of an institutional, business, academic, innovation and sports mission to the Moroccan Souss‑Massa region, which began on Monday in the archipelago.
“The competence to establish foreign relations belongs to the Government of Spain. We are part of Spain and, of course, we fully respect whatever our government decides. We share and fully comply with that agreement,” he said.
