Canary Islands Government Boosts Primary Sector Visibility and Local Product Promotion at FEAGA 2026
The regional Government has expanded its presence at the Fuerteventura Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Fair (FEAGA) 2026, held in Puerto del Rosario. A comprehensive programme of activities aims to raise the profile of the primary sector and encourage citizens to choose locally produced goods.
A Revamped Stand and a Strategic Agenda
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, together with its autonomous agencies and the public company Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias), unveiled a renovated stand measuring 10 × 7 metres. The stand serves as a showcase for the regional executive’s work and hosts a series of actions designed to connect producers with the public.
“This event constitutes a key meeting point for primary‑sector professionals to exchange experiences and knowledge, and for them to engage directly with citizens,” said Narvay Quintero, Canary Islands Minister of Agriculture.
The minister highlighted that the fair helps bring local products to consumers and valorise the work behind each production. He added that the gathering also facilitates dialogue between seasoned farmers and livestock breeders and the new generations entering the sector, fostering the much‑needed generational renewal.
Historic Cooperation Agreement
During the second day of FEAGA, a cooperation agreement was signed between GMR Canarias and the Fuertegourmet Association. The pact focuses on joint promotion, commercialization, innovation and consumption of Canary products both locally and on the mainland, aligning with the regional strategy “Crecer Juntos” (Growing Together), which seeks synergies between the primary sector and tourism.
“This historic collaboration allows the Majorero product, renowned for its quality and prestige, to reach the rest of the world thanks to coordinated public‑private efforts,” emphasized Minister Quintero.
President of Fuertegourmet, Gustavo Astrada, echoed the sentiment:
“The agreement allows us to take the fruit of our work to a wider audience. It also opens doors for educational and training initiatives, boosting every level linked to the primary sector.”
Weekend Programme: Workshops and Live Demonstrations
From Friday to Sunday, FEAGA offers a series of valorisation workshops targeting both children and adults. Activities include:
- Tasting and learning about cheeses, wines, ciders, honey, tropical fruits, and extra‑virgin olive oil.
- Showcasing award‑winning products from the Agrocanarias contests.
- Live cooking demonstrations.
GMR Canarias also promotes initiatives under the “Crecer Juntos” strategy, supporting the consumption and marketing of Canary producers’ elaborations. Additionally, the Government, through GMR Canarias, sponsors a livestock dragging exhibition and cattle‑handling demonstrations, in partnership with the Canary Dragging Federation and the Association of Guayeros de Tegueste.
“La Frutiguagua” – Encouraging Healthy Eating from an Early Age
The Canary Institute of Agro‑Food Quality (ICCA) participates with “La Frutiguagua,” an activity linked to the School Fruit and Vegetable Plan. Using a didactic and playful approach, the initiative aims to stimulate early consumption of fresh, seasonal, locally sourced produce. It features:
- Tasting sessions and participatory activities.
- Audiovisual content promoting healthy nutrition.
The institute also maintains an exhibition space to highlight products that have won the Official Agrocanarias contests, reinforcing the visibility and market positioning of high‑quality agro‑food productions from the archipelago, such as wines, cheeses, gofio, ciders, sea salts, and extra‑virgin olive oil.
