Canary Islands' registered unemployment falls by 1,138 in April, down 0.78%

There are 145,361 unemployed people in the islands, according to data released this Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour.

Registered unemployment fell in April in the Canary Islands by 1,138 people, a 0.78 % drop, while on a year‑on‑year basis it decreased by 9,283, that is 6 %, bringing the number of unemployed in the islands to 145,361.

At the end of the fourth month of 2026, registered unemployment in the province of Las Palmas stood at 74,845, i.e., 606 fewer than in March, representing a monthly decline of 0.80 % and a year‑on‑year decrease of 6.43 %, with 5,141 fewer unemployed in the eastern islands.

In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, unemployment at the end of April affected 70,516 people, that is 532 fewer than in March, reflecting a monthly decline of 0.75 % and a year‑on‑year decrease of 5.55 %, since in April 2025 the western islands had 4,142 fewer unemployed.

Of the 145,361 unemployed registered in the Canary Islands at the end of April:

  • 2,351 were in agriculture,
  • 5,347 in industry,
  • 11,809 in construction,
  • 115,238 in services,
  • 10,616 had no previous employment.

Unemployment rose by 27 people in agriculture and 69 in industry, while it fell by 165, 834, and 235 people in construction, services, and the “no previous employment” category, respectively, compared with March.

Of the 10,616 unemployed without previous employment, 4,687 were aged 44 years or older.

In April, 53,030 contracts were signed in the Canary Islands, 6,609 fewer than in March (a decline of 11.08 %), but 294 more than those signed in the same month of 2025, indicating a year‑on‑year growth of 0.56 %.

  • 24,087 of those contracts were permanent,
  • 28,943 were temporary.

Both categories recorded monthly declines of 11.81 % (permanent) and 10.47 % (temporary). On a year‑on‑year basis, permanent contracts rose by 10 %, while temporary contracts fell by 6.15 %.

By the end of March, 18,056 unemployment benefit applications had been submitted in the Canary Islands, of which 16,081 were approved within an average of 0.52 days. This raised the number of beneficiaries to 67,870 people and the total expenditure to €102.9 million.
