Puerto del Rosario City Council voices concern over energy planning

The council calls for greater coordination between administrations and rejects the consolidation of alternative sites to Zurita

The Puerto del Rosario City Council has formally conveyed its concern about the evolution of the competitive bidding process launched by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge for the electricity systems of non‑peninsular territories, as well as the actions linked to the current energy emergency in the Canary Islands.

The position has been communicated to both the Government of the Canary Islands and the State through the corresponding registered institutional letters, requesting stronger coordination among administrations to ensure an energy plan that aligns with the island’s territorial model and the real needs of the insular power system.

Current energy policy trends favor distributed generation, promoting a tighter and more efficient coupling between conventional and renewable sources, as well as greater system efficiency and resilience.

The council reminds that, in coordination with the Fuerteventura Island Council, it has maintained a clear institutional stance: the deployment of new energy infrastructures and the relocation of the El Charco thermal plant to the Los Llanos Pelados (Zurita) area—adjacent to the environmental complex—must be consistent with the General Urban Planning Plan and the agreements already adopted.

However, analysis of the state‑level procedure’s evolution and actions arising from the energy‑emergency declaration indicates consideration of other areas within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, particularly the La Herradura zone. In this area, energy‑generation installations are already being installed and business proposals are being submitted under the cited procedure.

“The criterion of this City Council has been clear from the start: the relocation of the El Charco thermal plant must be carried out in Zurita, as reflected in the municipal planning and the institutional agreements reached,” said Mayor David de Vera.

In this context, a face‑to‑face meeting is scheduled for May 18, at the request of the City Council, between Mayor David de Vera and the Canary Islands Government’s Minister of Ecological Transition. The aim is to strengthen institutional dialogue and advance coordinated solutions.

The council emphasizes that the Puerto del Rosario General Urban Planning Plan already designates the Zurita zone as the appropriate space for concentrating this type of infrastructure.

Consequently, the Puerto del Rosario City Council reiterates its institutional position and asks both the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Canary Islands Government to take its criteria into account, avoiding the consolidation of alternative sites that could jeopardize the municipality’s territorial model.
