Launch and Technical Specs

  • The vessel will be the first catamaran powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the largest of its class operating in the Canary Islands.
  • According to Puente de Mando:

“The engine start for the new catamaran Mercedes Pinto is scheduled for the second half of April, while the ship is currently being outfitted afloat at Astilleros Armón in Gijón. If everything proceeds as planned, the official delivery is set for May.”

  • The ship, bearing the Balearia Canarias logo, is expected to be inaugurated in the Canary Islands in June.

Expected Service

  • Industry specialists speculate that the catamaran could be deployed on the Las Palmas–Morro Jable line, restoring a daily service on that route.
  • Other deployment options are also being considered, according to the specialized magazine.

Vessel Background

  • The new Balearia Canarias emblem represents the third vessel of its class designed by Incat Crowther and built at Astilleros Armón in Gijón.
  • It will be the first LNG‑propelled catamaran and the largest of its class to operate in the Canary Islands.
