Chef Jorge González Carballeira to Represent Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands in the National “Uncover the Legumes” Grand Final

Chef Jorge González Carballeira, head of the restaurant Awen in Fuerteventura, has been selected to represent the Canary Islands in the grand final of the III National Championship “Destapa las Legumbres”, a prestigious gastronomic contest that will bring together one chef from each autonomous community. In total, 17 cooks will compete for the national title, making this event one of the most significant culinary gatherings of the year.

The appointment of González Carballeira marks, for the third consecutive year, the presence of Fuerteventura and the archipelago in this high‑level championship, consolidating the prestige of the majorero product and the work carried out by chefs linked to the association Fuertegourmet. His selection follows a rigorous process driven by the Inter‑Professional Legume Organization in collaboration with gastronomic entities from each territory, which evaluates trajectory, creativity and commitment to the local product.

This year, the competition gains a special dimension, as the national final will become the central act of the international celebration of World Legume Day 2026, designated by the FAO and officially hosted in Castilla y León. Thus, the contest will not only crown the best chef, but will also serve as a global showcase to promote the value of legumes as a sustainable, healthy and essential food in the fight against hunger.

“Representing the Canary Islands and, especially, Fuerteventura in this context is an honor and a great responsibility,” the chef said, highlighting the opportunity the event offers to show the world the potential of legumes and territory‑linked gastronomy. His culinary proposal again emphasizes zero‑kilometre product, sustainability and a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional recipes.

The grand final will be held on February 10, starting at 10:00 a.m., at the Miguel Delibes Cultural Center. Jorge González Carballeira’s participation provides a new source of pride for Fuerteventura and for all of the Canary Islands, which will again be present at one of the most important national gastronomic tables, projecting their culinary identity before an international audience.
