City Council pushes to add La Cornisa to the capital's historic heritage

Puerto del Rosario is strengthening the protection of its historical heritage with legal rigor, transparency, and citizen participation.

The municipal government announced that the environmental body of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has published, in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas (BOP No. 149, dated 12 December 2025), the public exhibition of the minor amendment to the General Plan, in compliance with a court ruling. This step is part of the broader process of safeguarding and regulating the town’s historic assets.

“I usually do not respond to debates generated on social media, but given the confusion created I consider it necessary to clarify our position. Some question the protection of heritage, but the facts say exactly the opposite,” said Mayor David de Vera.

The mayor added that the current administration is working to approve, for the first time in the municipality’s history, a Municipal Heritage Catalog that lists more than 800 protected assets, providing Puerto del Rosario with a solid technical and legal tool to defend its historical and cultural identity.

Following the conclusion of the public exhibition, the drafting team is preparing the Response Report that will address all submitted objections and sectoral reports, proposing how to incorporate the new assets.

Urban Planning and Zoning

Councilor for Urban Planning Ana Hernández explained:

“The minor amendment to the General Plan strictly follows the court ruling and is being processed with the utmost technical and legal rigor. From Urban Planning we have worked to guarantee legal certainty, protect the general interest, and ensure coherence with the Municipal Heritage Catalog.”

She continued:

“This procedure includes the public exhibition, the corresponding objection period, and the issuance of municipal technical‑legal reports together with the required sectoral studies. At present, the process is in the phase of approving the strategic environmental assessment report, which demonstrates that we are acting transparently and in accordance with current legislation.”

Historical Heritage

Heritage Councilor David de León highlighted the significance of La Cornisa:

“La Cornisa has been identified as a historically relevant ensemble within this process. Its buildings are being examined through the appropriate sectoral reports for incorporation and effective protection in the final catalog.”

He emphasized the transparency of the procedure:

“The process is being carried out with full transparency, public exhibition, neighborhood participation, and all legal guarantees. Currently, the procedure is in the public exhibition phase by the Cabildo’s environmental body, as reflected in the BOP.”

Precautionary Measures

The council also announced responsible precautionary measures, such as the suspension of urban licences, including demolition permits, to prevent irreversible damage to the historic heritage while technical and administrative procedures are completed.

“The commitment of this City Council to heritage is not based on statements or social‑media noise, but on responsible decisions, on complying with court rulings, on rejecting incompatible urban proposals, and on acting with the highest legal rigor,” added Mayor David de Vera.

Both officials agreed that protecting heritage means protecting the history, identity, and future of Puerto del Rosario, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to proceed with seriousness, dialogue, and institutional responsibility.

“That is exactly what we are doing from this City Council for Puerto del Rosario,” concluded the mayor.
