Cleaning Wolf Island from Above

“Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” Restores the Trail to the Islet’s Summit and Rehabilitates the Surroundings

The small Lobos Island is currently the focus of a meticulous intervention carried out by the “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” programme. Workers are improving the trail that climbs to the island’s highest point, which offers privileged views of the rest of Lobos, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the sea channel that separates the islands. The site is an iconic spot for locals and a major tourist attraction. The accessibility upgrade is being performed with the utmost care at the request of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Environment and Works & Machinery services.

The Works & Machinery Service has tasked its in‑house Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning unit (Gesplan), in coordination with the Environment Service, with maintaining the path that leads up Lobos Mountain. The work is carried out with great caution so as not to disturb the landscape and to preserve its pristine natural character.

The crews are working on a trail that extends roughly 350 linear metres toward the summit. The terrain consists of natural volcanic stone and native scree.

To achieve the goal of providing limited, safe access for hikers without harming the environment, the crews use locally sourced natural stone. The process is slow and meticulous, but essential for safeguarding the wild scenery.

To date, more than 200 metres of the trail have been upgraded with natural stone, and additional work has been undertaken to rehabilitate over 100 square metres of area adjacent to the path. The trail is now clearly marked, and visitor traffic is being restricted to minimise impact on the zone. Project managers, part of the “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” initiative, expect to finish the works on Lobos Island next week.
