Corralejo Hosts First Fuerteventura International Athletics Meeting on May 30‑31

La Oliva and the Island Council strengthen support for this sport while promoting the facilities of the Island Athletics Center

The municipality of La Oliva, through its Sports Department headed by Gleiber Carreño, together with the Sports Department of the Fuerteventura Island Council led by Luis González, is launching the inaugural International Athletics Meeting of Fuerteventura. The two‑day competition will take place on May 30 and 31, aiming not only to boost the development of athletics events locally but also to raise the international profile of the Island Athletics Center of Fuerteventura (CAIF).

The meeting will be honored by Olympic medalist Ruth Beitia, who will serve as the event’s patron. A total of 68 athletes from several countries—including Spain, Poland, the United Kingdom, Scotland and the Czech Republic—will compete for podium places in combined events, shot put, discus, javelin and hammer throw.

“This gathering will bring together both new national and international athletes at our facilities, and at the same time solidify CAIF as a reference point in sport both within and beyond the Canary Islands. In this sense, the International Athletics Meeting of Fuerteventura underscores our efforts to position the island as a high‑quality sports‑tourism destination,” said Isaí Blanco, mayor of La Oliva.

“Hosting this first international competition in our municipality reinforces our commitment to athletics while establishing La Oliva as an international sports benchmark. Having Olympic medalist Ruth Beitia as the patron transcends the island’s borders, attracting new interest in our competitions and facilities in the unique setting of La Oliva,” added Gleiber Carreño, councilor for Sports.

“The International Athletics Meeting of Fuerteventura is a historic event—the first international track‑and‑field competition hosted by Fuerteventura, and a source of pride for the island,” declared Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Island Council. “This event demonstrates the importance of continued investment in top‑level sports infrastructure. When we invest in sport, we create opportunities to attract major events, position Fuerteventura as a reference sporting venue, and promote healthy habits.”

The meeting highlights the local government’s determination to promote sport in the municipality and to strengthen its image as a premier sports‑tourism destination both on the island and abroad.
