Corralejo II Health Center construction to begin in June, slated for one‑year completion

The Canary Islands Health Service has awarded the contract for the new health centre in northern Fuerteventura for €9.9 million. The project, co‑financed with European funds, was celebrated by both the island council and the municipal government.

The Health Ministry of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Economic Resources of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), formalised the contract to build the new Corralejo II Dunes Health Center in the municipality of La Oliva for a total amount of €9,924,754.45 (including IGIC).

The works, co‑financed by the European Union through the FEDER Canarias 2021‑2027 programme, are scheduled for 23 months of execution. Construction is set to start in June, pending the signing of the layout verification act. The final award was decided on 1 April, and the contract was signed on Tuesday, 5 May.

The new building will have a 3,500 m² floor area on a single level to ensure accessibility. It will host:

  • Family and community medicine consultations
  • Nursing services
  • Pediatrics
  • Emergency care
  • Minor surgery
  • Women’s health and physiotherapy
  • Oral health
  • Conventional radiology
  • Administrative and service areas

The centre responds to the demographic growth of the Basic Health Zone of La Oliva, which currently serves 27,450 individual health cards. This zone covers the populations of Corralejo, La Oliva, Lajares, El Cotillo, Caldereta, El Roque, Tindaya, Vallebrón, Villaverde, Majanicho, Parque Holandés and the Island of Lobos.

“Deadlines Are Being Met” – Expanding Service to 27,000 Health Cards

“We said the works would start before summer, and today, with the award, we see the planned deadlines are being met, with construction set to begin next June,” said Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Island Council.

García added that the new centre “will allow us to provide better care, in line with demographic growth, for a municipality that now has 27,450 health cards.”

Isaí Blanco, Mayor of La Oliva, highlighted that “the joint effort of the Town Hall, the Island Council and the Government enables a clear response to population growth and, therefore, a quality health service for all residents of the municipality.”

Tomás Pérez, Director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, noted that the construction addresses “the need to strengthen health care in the Basic Health Zone of La Oliva, due to the population increase recorded in recent years.”

The current Corralejo Health Center has reached its capacity limit after several expansions and renovations over the past years. The new infrastructure will reinforce health services in the north of the island and increase the municipality’s care capacity.

The tender for the works was approved in December 2025 through an open procedure, following the project drafting phase that began in 2024. The drafting contract was awarded by the Health Ministry for €88,953.27. Construction will take place on land previously ceded by the La Oliva Town Hall.
