First stone laid for 47 affordable homes in Puerto del Rosario
The ceremony marks the revival of public housing construction in the municipality after more than a decade without new projects of this kind.
Project Overview
The Regional Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, together with the director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), Pino de León, placed the first stone of a new building comprising 47 protected apartments in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.
In a statement, the Canary Islands government emphasized that this initiative will restore public housing development in the town after a prolonged hiatus.
“The Don Quijote development restores an essential public policy to guarantee access to housing and demonstrates the Canary Government’s commitment to reactivate public housing construction after years of inactivity. We are contributing six million euros through ICAVI,” – Pablo Rodríguez.
Inter‑governmental Collaboration
María Jesús de la Cruz, Director of the State Administration in Fuerteventura, highlighted the joint effort:
“This is an example of how state, regional and local administrations collaborate to build homes. It is not the complete solution—Canary Islands and Fuerteventura still face a significant deficit—but it is a step forward, made possible by coordinated action across administrations.”
Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, noted the broader investment:
“The Cabildo is committing €53 million to boost housing across Fuerteventura, a result of joint work among administrations. This enables the construction of 176 homes in various municipalities, and today we lay the first stone for 47 new units in Puerto del Rosario, thanks to the land grant from the City Council.”
David de Vera, Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, described the project’s impact on residents:
“This is a highly anticipated news for many families in our municipality who need dignified housing. The stone‑laying symbolizes more than the start of a construction; it represents a commitment to expand the public housing stock and address one of citizens’ main concerns.”
