'Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature' Enhances Gardens at La Oliva Biological Station

Blas Acosta: “The purpose of the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme is to improve the quality of life on the island through small works with great impact, although year after year they have been postponed to cover other priorities.”

The La Oliva Biological Station is entering a new phase of refurbishment under a project commissioned by the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. This phase focuses on the station’s gardens and related infrastructure, while parallel works that began in August continue to develop a new access route through the didactic garden and additional shaded areas.

What the Programme Aims to Achieve

“The renovation of the La Oliva Biological Station, just as the railing and staircase of the Tarajalejo promenade, is a good example of the small‑scale actions of the programme and of the capacity of this tool, which is pioneering on the island and represents a qualitative leap in public management,” explains Councillor for Works and Machinery Blas Acosta.

Main Works at the Biological Station

  • Irrigation renewal for the fauna garden, including replacement and repair of irrigation heads.
  • Garden tidying through pruning of maritime pines to improve aesthetics and safety.
  • Construction of a retaining wall along the interior path of the environmental‑education garden.

Parallel Infrastructure Projects

  • Ongoing works started in August are being carried out in the open area next to the Tarajal Blanco and in the zone designated for the exhibition of the Canary Garden.

About the La Oliva Biological Station

The station serves as a recovery centre for wild flora and fauna, equipped with a necropsy laboratory and a didactic classroom for educational activities.

Funding, Timeline, and Scope

  • The contract, awarded to Gesplan by the department headed by Blas Acosta, covers a 15‑month period (2024‑2025).

  • €4 million of the Cabildo’s own funds will be allocated to roughly one hundred “proximity actions.”

  • These actions are designed to:

    • Directly support the conservation of the natural environment.
    • Enhance the visitor experience at the station.
    • Improve the quality of life for local residents.
