Fuerteventura Summer University Will Dedicate Its Fourth Edition to Fake News and Disinformation

The Summer University of Fuerteventura will hold its fourth edition from 22 to 26 June at the Centro Insular de Juventud, with a programme focused on analysing fake news and the handling of information in today’s society. The initiative, promoted by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will offer five days of public lectures featuring top‑level experts in philosophy, communication, law and education. Attendance is free, but registration is required from 16 June on the event’s official website.

Reflection in an Age of Over‑Information

In a context marked by an overabundance of information and the proliferation of hoaxes and disinformation across social media, the press, politics and science, this edition will tackle the cultural, social and educational challenges linked to truthfulness in communication.

“The Summer University consolidates itself with its fourth edition by addressing a pivotal issue through knowledge and dialogue as a collective responsibility,” said island president Lola García. García also thanked the University of La Laguna and organisations such as the DISA Foundation, the MAPFRE Canarias Foundation and Canary Islands Radio‑Television for strengthening Fuerteventura’s role as a space for debate and knowledge generation.

Education and Youth Councillor Adargoma Hernández noted that previous editions covered topics such as mental health, education and artificial intelligence, and that this year the focus will be on informational veracity. As a novelty, a round‑table will be held at the Gran Tarajal Library to advance the decentralisation of the event.

Nationally Recognised Speakers

Confirmed experts include journalist Lucía Méndez, philosopher David Pastor Vico, Constitutional Law professor Joaquín Urías, dean of the Faculty of Information Sciences at the UCM Ángel Rubio, and philosopher‑essayist José Antonio Marina, among other renowned academics.

The organisers emphasise that this edition reinforces the ambition to cement the Summer University of Fuerteventura as a reference forum in the Canary Islands, aligned with nationally established academic formats and aimed at delivering rigorous, high‑quality content that is accessible to all citizens.
