Fuerteventura to Receive Over €280,000 for Rural Home Renovations and Fight Against Depopulation
The Government of the Canary Islands will allocate more than €280,000 to municipalities on Fuerteventura as part of a new aid call for the rehabilitation of rural homes and the fight against depopulation, driven by the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) and the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (FECAM).
The programme has a total budget of €5 million and will benefit 58 Canary municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. Its aim is to improve habitability in rural areas and encourage residents to remain in these towns.
For Fuerteventura, the beneficiary municipalities are:
- Tuineje: €140,252.87
- Antigua: €117,483.91
- Betancuria: €24,072.07
The grants will finance actions related to:
- Rehabilitation of housing units
- Accessibility improvements
- Adaptation of homes for people with reduced mobility or functional diversity
- Installation of home‑automation (domotics) systems
- Measures to boost energy efficiency
The programme also includes interventions in kitchens, bathrooms and toilets to guarantee minimum habitability standards, as well as works on isolated dwellings outside the urban plan when they contribute to regularisation.
Municipalities can submit their projects until June 15, and the local administrations themselves will manage and allocate the subsidies according to the criteria set out in the call.
The initiative is part of the Canary Islands Government’s strategy to combat rural depopulation, promote decent and accessible housing, and strengthen territorial cohesion across the archipelago.
