La Alcogida Ecomuseum Revamped to Showcase Life in Fuerteventura
The goal of the renewal project is to let people see how life used to be on Fuerteventura. The initiative, presented on Friday, aims to modernise the image and musealisation of the La Alcogida Ecomuseum.
The project is promoted by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura as part of its strategic plan to modernise the island’s museum network. Works will begin soon, after the contract—worth more than €219,000—was awarded and financed by the Canary Islands Government’s Tourism Department through Gesprotur, within the framework of the Canary Islands Strategy for Island Tourism Infrastructure.
Project Overview
The Strategic Museum Plan for Fuerteventura seeks to re‑value and modernise around twenty actions across all museum sites.
“This includes not only the opening of new centres but also the renovation of existing ones,” explains Cabildo President Lola García.
One of the most visited sites, whose transformation is highly demanded, is the La Alcogida Ecomuseum.
“We will update the centre’s image, renew its content and improve accessibility, enhancing how the emblematic space—integrating Majorero culture and traditions—is narrated,” García added, noting that the works are expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Implementation and Partners
Lola García also highlighted the importance of inter‑administrative collaboration for a project of this scale. The Cabildo processed the tender through the public company Gesprotur, and the contract was awarded to GAIA Consultores Insulares S.L.U., with a six‑month execution period from the start of the works.
Tourism Councilor Jessica de León said:
“This intervention will improve the tourist experience across Fuerteventura’s museum network, especially at La Alcogida, where a comprehensive action will enhance accessibility, promote digitalisation and create a more interactive experience, while also highlighting the island’s traditions.”
During the site visit, Museum Councilor Rayco León and Gesprotur manager Ignacio Solana were also present.
Technological Enhancements
The renovation represents a crucial milestone for revitalising one of Fuerteventura’s most emblematic cultural spaces. It aims not only to preserve the island’s heritage but also to modernise visitor experience through new technologies that bring Majorero traditions closer to residents and tourists.
Advanced technology will play a key role, with state‑of‑the‑art sound and video projection equipment installed in the museum’s rooms. Interactive tools will allow visitors to actively participate in the exhibitions.
The project also includes:
- Re‑organisation of exhibition areas and renewal of display spaces, redesigning supports and structures to highlight the value of collections and ensure proper conservation.
- Improvements in visual communication, adding informative panels and signage that foster direct, personalised interaction with the content.
- Production of high‑quality audiovisual material, a cornerstone of the renovation, creating original videos that narrate the island’s stories and traditions.
- Updating interior furniture to improve the display and organisation of artefacts, creating a smoother flow for visitors.
