New Green Spaces in Tamaragua
La Oliva commits to investing European funds in the environment and quality of life of the municipality
Tourism‑related European funds once again translate into the care, creation, and conservation of the municipality’s natural environment. The La Oliva City Council, through the Tourism Department managed by David Fajardo and in favor of the Environment, is promoting “green lungs” in La Capellanía. Following the council’s commission to Glesplan under the Tourism Sustainability Plan, a project to create biodiversity refuges covering more than 500 m² in Tamaragua has been launched.
The goal is to establish spaces that conserve local fauna and flora, thereby reaffirming the island’s territorial identity and value while improving environmental quality, reducing the “heat‑island” effect, enhancing ecological connectivity, and providing areas with social and educational significance.
Mayor’s Statement
“The presentation of this project to the residents of the area paves the way for the implementation of these green lungs that will bring life to zones that are currently desolate.”
“It is a significant step not only regarding the creation of a new green space, but also, through this action, we manage to imprint our identity and the value of our territory, so that both locals and visitors can enjoy it.” – Isaí Blanco, Mayor of La Oliva
Tourism and Environment Councilor’s Remarks
“This is another example of how tourism can translate into the care of our natural environment. With the creation of these green lungs, we mark a before and after in turning tourism funds into environmental actions, as we take another step, betting not only on the conservation of our nature but also on transforming a completely abandoned area into a green meeting space, with shade and fully beautified.” – David Fajardo, Councilor for Tourism and Environment
“The return is evident. We have moved from having a desolate space to a new green area, which not only improves the municipality’s image but is imbued with the unique identity of our territory, such as our local fauna and flora. A place of enjoyment for locals and visitors that does not lose sight of environmental awareness.” – David Fajardo
Economic and Finance Councilor’s Perspective
“These funds secured through the European Funds Office that we have created during this legislature enable us to launch actions that benefit the well‑being of our residents as well as our visitors. This achievement allows us to shape new projects that we could barely imagine without external funding.” – Juan José Rodríguez, Councilor for Economy and Finance
The initiative exemplifies how European tourism funding can be harnessed to enhance ecological preservation, community well‑being, and the overall attractiveness of La Oliva.
