PPP Dog Food Adoption at Laiva Animal Shelter

“PPP dogs carry a reputation they don’t deserve. Don’t be afraid of them. Give them a second chance.”
These are some of the messages the La Oliva City Council has posted on social media to promote the adoption of breeds classified as potentially dangerous.

The campaign introduces a novel incentive: “We’ll give you the value of the PPP licence in dog food for your new companion.”
The council, through the Public Health Department, Gesplan, and the La  Animal Shelter, aims to dispel prejudices about these dogs, arguing that with proper care and education they can be “potentially perfect” pets rather than a danger.

“Don’t be afraid of them. Give them a second chance. Life changes, and they can change yours too.”

Legal Framework for Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP)

Spanish legislation requires owners of PPP‑classified breeds to comply with strict rules:

  • Dogs must be walked in public on a short leash (under 2 m) and wear a muzzle.
  • Owners must hold the appropriate administrative licence (valid for five years).
  • The owner must be over 18, have no criminal record or serious sanctions.
  • Owners must pass physical and psychological fitness tests.
  • A specific civil‑liability insurance is mandatory.
  • Additional security measures include mandatory muzzles, non‑extendable short leashes, and prohibiting walks by minors.

Breeds commonly subject to these rules include Pit‑Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, among others.
