PSOE proposes a USECIC support base for the Civil Guard in Gran Tarajal
The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura has put forward a plan to expand the Civil Guard’s presence on the island by establishing an “operational support base” of the Citizen Security Unit of the Command (USECIC) in Gran Tarajal, complementing the existing central base in Puerto del Rosario.
Rationale
The party argues that, after creating a commander’s post on Fuerteventura and setting up a permanent USECIC base, the next logical step is to strengthen operational capabilities in the island’s southern region. The USECIC is a specialized unit that handles high‑risk situations, combats organized crime, manages crowd control at public events, and provides assistance in searches and arrests.
Statement from José Cabrera
“This specialized Civil Guard unit is very necessary to improve citizen security on the island, given its immediate operational capacity. To operate effectively across the whole island, it should have a support base in a major population centre in the south.”
José Cabrera Noda serves as the Municipal Policy Secretary for the PSOE of Fuerteventura.
Current Coverage
- The Civil Guard currently provides services in 65 % of the island’s territory.
- It attends to 82.54 % of the registered population, including virtually the entire hotel sector.
- The establishment of the commander’s post has raised the strategic importance of Fuerteventura within the Ministry of the Interior, allowing an expansion of personnel and specialized units.
The proposal aims to ensure a more balanced and responsive security presence throughout Fuerteventura, particularly in its southern communities.
