PSOE proposes a Usecic support base in Gran Tarajal to strengthen security in the south
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura has expressed its support for the work carried out by the Ministry of the Interior and the General Directorate of the Civil Guard on the island, and it has proposed the creation of a “support operational base” for the Citizen Security Unit of the Command (Usecic) in Gran Tarajal, complementing the central base located in Puerto del Rosario.
The Usecic, recently deployed in Fuerteventura alongside the establishment of a commander’s post, is a specialized unit of the Civil Guard aimed at reinforcing citizen security through rapid intervention, assistance to other units, and crime prevention. Its functions include:
- Responding to high‑risk situations
- Conducting operations against organized crime
- Managing crowds at public events
- Supporting searches and arrests
José Cabrera, secretary of Municipal Policy for the majorero PSOE, considers the unit “very necessary” to improve the island’s immediate operational capacity. However, he argues that to guarantee an effective response throughout the territory, a support base should be located in one of the main southern towns.
Since the summer of 2025, the Civil Guard in Fuerteventura expanded its command structure by adding a commander’s post, a move that heightened the island’s strategic importance within the Ministry of the Interior and enabled the expansion of specialized units, including the Usecic.
At present, the Civil Guard provides services in 65 % of the island’s territory, attends to 82.54 % of the resident population, and covers virtually the entire hotel sector. For the socialists, the next step in reinforcing citizen security is to establish a support operational base in Gran Tarajal, which, together with the main headquarters in Puerto del Rosario, would enable a more agile and balanced response across the island.
The PSOE stresses that security planning must be handled with “discretion and institutional loyalty,” defending the common goal of enhancing the resources and response capacity of the security forces.
“In citizen security, perception is as important as reality,” concluded José Cabrera.
