Public Works puts Airport‑Pozo Negro stretch up for tender on Christmas Day

The Canary Islands Government’s Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, led by Pablo Rodríguez, has announced a public tender for the Airport–Pozo Negro stretch of the North‑South axis highway on Fuerteventura. The contract is valued at €215,924,834.98 (including IGIC).

“We are talking about a long‑awaited piece of infrastructure that now has all the technical, administrative and environmental guarantees to take a definitive step forward,” said Rodríguez. “It is the most valuable segment of the North‑South axis and the largest road tender in Fuerteventura’s history.”

Project Overview

  • Scope: Upgrade the Airport–Pozo Negro segment of the Puerto del Rosario–Morro Jable road, adding new connections to FV‑2, FV‑413 and FV‑50.
  • Purpose: Improve access to the airport, tourist hubs such as Caleta de Fuste, and various urban and rural areas of the municipality of Antigua.
  • Budget: €215.9 million (base tender price, IGIC included).

The technical approval was granted in September 2025, and the procurement file was opened in December after a particularly complex technical and environmental review.

Key Engineering Features

  • Twin‑tube tunnel: Approximately 1.2 km long, with false tunnels at both ends, marking the island’s first double‑tube tunnel. Designed to protect natural habitats and sensitive species such as the hubara lizard.
  • Viaduct: A 190 m structure spanning the Barranco de la Torre.
  • Additional works:
    • New interchanges and links to existing roads.
    • An overpass and several underpasses to maintain continuity of existing routes.

Environmental and Energy Measures

  • Installation of photovoltaic panels to supply 100 % of the electricity needed for lighting, tunnel operations, and the new links.
  • The highway will be energy‑neutral and self‑sustaining, contributing to the island’s decarbonisation goals and reducing atmospheric emissions.

Economic Impact

  • Expected to significantly boost connectivity and mobility across Fuerteventura.
  • Anticipated to generate local economic activity and employment during construction and beyond.

Tender Details

  • Submission deadline: 5 February, 18:00 CET (Canary Time).
  • How to apply: Via the State Public Procurement Platform.

Interested companies are encouraged to submit their bids before the deadline to take part in this landmark infrastructure project.
