Severe landslides hit Risco de Famara
Authorities are investigating whether any people or public infrastructure have been affected.
Around 1:30 p.m., images of a possible slope failure on the Famara Cliff reached the newsroom, specifically in the area known as El Gallo within the municipality of Haría.
The footage was recorded by firefighters from La Graciosa, who noticed the ground movement while working in the vicinity. After spotting the potential landslide, the firefighters immediately alerted the Haría Local Police, which promptly dispatched officers to the site to assess the situation on‑the‑ground and gauge the extent of the incident.
“At this time there are no reported injuries or damage to infrastructure,” officials confirmed, while maintaining surveillance over this stretch of the island’s northern coastline, where such natural phenomena can occur.
The event took place in the surroundings of the Famara Massif, one of Lanzarote’s oldest and most emblematic geological formations. This massive volcanic complex, deeply eroded by wind, rain and sea over millions of years, creates the island’s characteristic northern cliff, reaching heights of up to 600 meters in some sections.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, the Famara Cliff is a geologically active zone prone to minor landslides, especially after periods of moisture or ground instability, prompting heightened caution for anyone near the area.
