Swimmer dies after rescue at La Playa del Águila, south of El Cotillo
A second person managed to get out on their own at the also‑called Playa de La Escalera
A person died at around 5:30 p.m. this afternoon at Playa del Águila, also known as Playa de La Escalera, in the municipality of La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura.
A short while before that time, the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 112 of the Government of the Canary Islands received an alert reporting that two people were in distress in the sea at the aforementioned beach.
One of them managed to get out of the water and, after being assisted by SUC personnel, was transferred to a health centre. Rescuers from the GES helicopter located the victim, hoisted him onto the aircraft, and discovered that he was in cardiopulmonary arrest. They performed resuscitation maneuvers while transporting him to a nearby area.
Once on land, SUC staff—arriving in an ambulance and a medicalised helicopter—together with personnel from the local clinic continued resuscitation attempts without success and confirmed his death.
Members of the Beach Rescue Service and Civil Protection collaborated in attending to the victim. Local police and firefighters intervened in the deployed unit in the area. The Civil Guard is conducting the corresponding investigations.
