title.Antigua Mall Pushes Government to Unlock Integrated Distribution Center

Coalición Canaria announced on Monday that a meeting was held to revive the stalled Integrated Community Center (Centro Dotacional Integrado) in Antigua, a municipal facility whose administrative process has been frozen for years. The information was released in a party communiqué rather than through the usual communication channels of the public administrations involved.

Background

The centre, originally incorporated into the Island Cooperation Plan for Works and Services (PICOS) of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, has remained in a “skeleton” phase with no concrete progress. According to the party, the project stayed idle for two years under the current mayor, Matías Peña, “without any action taken to move it forward.”

Meeting Details

Urban Planning councillor David Alberto Guerra and Local Development Agency councillor Victoria Cerdeña met with the Canary Islands Government’s Vice‑Minister of Culture, Horacio Umpiérrez Sánchez, to restart the drafting of the technical project. During the meeting, the Urban Planning councillor proposed detaching the project from the PICOS plan so that the Canary Islands Government, through the Ministry of Culture, could assume responsibility for the technical design.

Funding for 2027

The party statement says Vice‑Minister Umpiérrez pledged to advance the technical draft and, once approved, to secure a dedicated line in the 2027 General Budget of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community, enabling the work to be completed.

Project Features

If realized, the Integrated Community Center would be situated between the El Portón library and the Antigua Senior Center. The proposed building would include:

  • Five classrooms of approximately 40 m² each
  • Offices for teaching staff
  • Reception areas
  • Multipurpose halls for large events
  • A semi‑basement that could serve as the municipal archive

Quotes

“This infrastructure would host and energize the sociocultural activity of the municipality of Antigua,” said Vice‑Minister Horacio Umpiérrez.

“The project responds to a long‑standing demand from local associations and groups,” emphasized David Alberto Guerra.

“The meeting marks the first step toward completing a work that has been pending for years,” highlighted Victoria Cerdeña.

Coalición Canaria also reminded that the basic project was first presented in 2021 within the Antigua Urban Plan and later incorporated into PICOS, yet no substantial advances were made. The party’s decision to issue the information through its own channels underscores ongoing coordination challenges within the governing coalition of the Antigua City Council.
