Antigua City Council urges Costas to repair Therese storm damage in Pozo Negro
The sinkholes and destruction in Pozo Negro pose a danger to the many families who visit the coastal town, as well as to its residents.
The council of Antigua has formally asked the Directorate of Coasts to intervene urgently and repair the damage caused by Storm Therese in Pozo Negro, citing the clear risk that the sinkholes represent for families, children and local residents.
“The Directorate of Coasts previously reported that the council carried out repairs that could not be completed after the damage that occurred a year ago,” explained Mayor Matías Peña. “We are now reiterating our request to intervene and fix the passage because of the danger it poses, and we are awaiting permission to act.”
The council considers this intervention a matter of urgency and is awaiting a prompt response and authorization from the Directorate of Coasts. The request has also been forwarded to the Fuerteventura Island Council, emphasizing the need to act in Pozo Negro as in other affected coastal villages.
“Once we receive the Directorate’s authorization, the council will, within the bounds of the law, mobilize all its resources and municipal funding to carry out the necessary emergency repairs,” concluded Mayor Matías Peña.
